From vines located just above Château Pavie and based on 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Pavie Decesse sports a vivid purple hue as well as a stunning nose of pure cassis, lead pencil, graphite, spring flowers, chocolate, and a wonderful sense of chalky minerality. It's put on weight since I tasted it from barrel and brings full-bodied richness and depth with plenty of ripe tannins, all of which are grounded by classic Saint-Emilion limestone-driven minerality. It's a beautifully deep, layered, powerful Pavie Decesse that's going to need 7-8 years, if not a decade, to hit maturity and will have 20-30 years of longevity.

(VN 96-98 points) The 2019 Pavie-Decesse is off the charts brilliant. Blueberry jam, graphite, menthol, licorice, espresso, lavender and cloves are some of the many nuances that unfold in a statuesque Saint-Émilion of dizzying scale. Big, brawny and powerful, the 2019 is going to require years in bottle to blossom, but it is immensely promising and very clearly a great wine in the making. -- Antonio Galloni

This is intense, powerful, with a swipe of fresh mint leaf. Deliciously sculpted and concentrated but whistle-clean on the finish, big-shouldered but light on its feet. An excellent Pavie Decesse with the tension of limestone, 3.51ph, 70% new oak.

Very inviting, with singed apple wood, warmed anise and plum reduction notes spilling forth, while the polished structure gives it a seemingly easy feel. Shows serious length and depth, with a subtle chalky minerality on the finish amid all the fruit. Lovely. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2038. — J.M.

Dark bramble fruits on the nose, blackcurrant, coffee grains, black cherries and some dark chocolate shavings. Mouth Filling and generous on the palate, a nice burst of fruit and acidity in the mouth then cooling blue fruits come through - dark liquorice, blueberry and black cherry. Nice freshness throughout, real airing in the mouth, this has depth of flavour and a strong structure. Quite a muscular style, flexing and powerful but smooth and well defined. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Drinking Window 2025 - 2045

Inky in color, the wine is rich, dense, lush, and shows a liqueur-influenced nose. The sensation of the fruits here is intense. The layers of intensely ripe, dark fruits, blackberries, plums, and black cherries come in waves. There is flesh and and flash, with length that provides a long, fruit-packed finish. drink from 2027-2050.

A dense wine, coming from a small vineyard just above Château Pavie, has powerful tannins and weight. Its structure and concentrated black fruits are rich, spicy with a strongly mineral texture. The wine will age well. Drink from 2026. Roger Voss

(92+ points) From a small vineyard located on the limestone slopes above Pavie itself, the Perse family's 2019 Pavie Decesse exhibits aromas of ripe cherries, crème de cassis and fruit liqueurs mingled with notions of menthol, vanilla pod and cloves. Full-bodied, rich and extracted, it's thick and muscular, with lively acids and prodigious reserves of chewy tannin that assert themselves on the finish. While it is a touch toned down by comparison with the wines produced here a decade ago, it remains one of the inkiest, most extracted wines in Saint-Émilion. I tend to think that an even gentler vinification would bear dividends without sacrificing the concentration and intensity of flavor that can be taken for granted with a terroir of such quality and viticulture of such exigence. - William Kelley
