JA 98

janeanson.com, February 2024

First time on the Place for this knockout iconic wine. Expect layers upon layers of fragrant plum, raspberry, black cherry, sandalwood, red liqourice, raspberry leaf, cola, sandalwood, pomegranate, climbing slowly but...

Wine Spectator, December 2023

This is an epic wine that doesn’t quit, opening up with ripe, fleshy flavors of black cherry, maraschino cherry and framboise. But the fruit notes are only the beginning, giving way to date-nut bread, salted bittersweet...

Decanter, February 2024

A strong heady nose, really full on and impactful, almost verging on too much. Rich and ripe, layered and dense, a full mouthful straight away with such bright acidity this is soaring out of the glass. Amazingly well...

Halliday Wine Companion, July 2023

A quieter release for the 2019 rendition of Penfolds' world-famous icon. A little less of the formic and VA heft of youth in this showing and a bit more approachable as a result. Deep crimson in the glass with familiar...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2024

Arguably Australia's most famous wine, the 2019 vintage of Grange, a multi-regional blend from top vineyards around South Australia, is a dense yet aromatic bottling that unpeels over time in a glass or decanter...

jamessuckling.com, July 2023

Dark, dank and immaculate. The oak handling and tannic precision boast ample class. Beneath lurks a latent, molten beauty that will unravel eventually. I like this Grange. I feel that the decadent style, molten and...

Vinous, July 2023

The bold, expansive 2019 Grange (97% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon) spent 19 months in larger new American Oak and is powerful and expressive as it delivers a dense core of coca, blackberry and baked terracotta aromas...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2023

95+ The 2019 Grange is 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It's the pinnacle of the Penfolds release (although if you ask me, the Chardonnays are my favorite part) and a wine that takes some understanding prior to...

The original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted utilizing fully-ripe, intensely-flavored and structured Shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognized as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. With an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951, Grange clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.

Penfolds Grange 2019 is a South Australian, multi-regional red built on Shiraz (97%) with a small Cabernet Sauvignon component (3%), drawing fruit from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, and Clare Valley. It sits squarely in the long-running Grange tradition: a flagship wine with an unbroken line of vintages since 1951 and the only wine heritage-listed by the South Australian National Trust. As ever, it is not a single-vineyard statement, but a blend assembled across regions to hit a consistent house style.

Technically, 2019 is set up for power with control. It comes in at 14.5% ABV with a reported pH of 3.62, and it spent 19 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Penfolds describes it as “full-bodied, powerful and balanced,” built from “fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and structured shiraz grapes,” and notes “unmistakable barrel-ferment characters” alongside “chewy/grainy tannins and just-right acidity” (Penfolds).

Critical reception is excellent and clustered at the very top of the scale. James Suckling awarded 98 points and framed the wine in plush, polished terms, calling it “Seamless” and “Gorgeous,” and ranked it #12 on his Top 100 list (James Suckling). Andrew Caillard MW went even further with a 98+ score—an emphatic endorsement that signals upside beyond the headline number (Andrew Caillard MW). Tyson Stelzer also rated it 98 points (Tyson Stelzer), reinforcing broad, high-level agreement among leading voices.

In vintage context, Penfolds reports below-average winter rainfall in Barossa and McLaren Vale, above-average in Coonawarra, with irrigation “crucial,” and concludes that yields were down but “quality was outstanding” (Penfolds). Released at around AUD$1000 per bottle (Wine House & Wine Co.), Grange 2019 is positioned for long aging, with Stelzer suggesting a drinking window of 2029–2065 (Tyson Stelzer).
