jebdunnuck.com, February 2024

A jeweled ruby/magenta hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Rennina shows off smoldering aromas of incense, cigar box, kirsch, lavender, and sage. It transitions to the palate with ease and is approachable, with refined...

Wine Enthusiast, July 2025

Wet slate brings a cooling element to an otherwise bright, solar nose of blood orange, tart, fresh raspberries and cherries. The palate remains balanced, between continued tang from black cherry and bergamot, and savory...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2023

Impeccably balanced with that proverbial Gaja Madias Touch that always denotes an extra level of creaminess or fruit concentration that fits lock and key with the wine's acidity and velvety tannic structure, this is a...

From three vineyards directly surrounding the Pieve Santa Restituta winery in Tavernelle, the Rennina bottling is akin to Barbaresco, according to Angelo Gaja. Harvested between 12 September to 1 October, the 2019...

Aromas of sweet cherries, roses, sweet tobacco, and hints of jam. Full and layered. Lots of fruit. Juicy finish. Chewy at the end, and with air it becomes layered and very structured. Cellar it. Give it three or four...

A powerful red, boasting macerated cherry, orange peel, plum, lavender, iron and eucalyptus flavors. Dense, dusty tannins emerge as this plays out on the long finish. Needs time. Best from 2027 through 2046.

Pieve Santa Restituta’s Brunello di Montalcino Rennina 2019 is a single-vineyard Brunello from Gaja’s Montalcino estate, purchased in 1994—an expansion that marked the family’s first move outside Piedmont since the firm’s 1859 beginnings. The property is named for an ancient pieve (church) on the estate; sources note foundations dating to the 4th century AD and that wine has been made here since the 12th century. Rennina itself is firmly traditional in makeup: 100% Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso), drawn from the Rennina area’s Santo Pietro, Castagno, and Pian dei Cerri sites, and bottled as Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.

In the glass, the 2019 is described as lighter in hue—“a light ruby-red color typical of a cooler vintage”—with a profile that leans into savory detail as much as fruit. Aromatically, it is reported to show herbs (thyme and rosemary) alongside red berry and stone-fruit tones (cherry and plum), with added accents of pine resin and vanilla bean. On the palate, sources describe a medium-bodied shape with “refined tannins,” “mouthwatering acidity,” and a “salty finish,” building a style that favors clarity and line over sheer mass.

Elevage is also clearly documented: the wine is aged for 24 months in oak, followed by six months in concrete vats before bottling. Grapes from the different parcels are fermented and macerated separately for about three weeks, a detail that fits the wine’s emphasis on precision.

Critical coverage specifically for Rennina 2019 is limited, but it includes an excellent score from Michael Godel (WineAlign), who awards 95 points and calls it “serious, stoic and tightly compact Brunello for 2019 and one to spend plenty of time getting to know.” That assessment captures the core message of this bottling: a structured, classically built Rennina that rewards patience and attention.
