(98+ points) One of the gems in the vintage is the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Barbe Rac, a 100% Grenache that was destemmed and brought up all in concrete tanks. Darker berries, ground pepper, graphite, and savory garrigue...

Opulent, lush, round, concentrated, and loaded with deep, dark, peppery red berries, kirsch, flowers, and herbs, with a long, supple, elegant finish to seal the deal. Drink from 2024-2040.

There's an appealing high-toned spice over the very ripe blackberry fruit here, like star anise. Very rounded and generous, but with some good intensity and freshness at its core. Concentrated and ripe but with good...

Chapoutier is one of the oldest wine producers in the Rhone Valley with a history dating back to 1808. A distant ancestor, Polydor Chapoutier, was the first to buy vines here, shifting from being a simple grape grower to making and trading his own wine. For the last two hundred years, the estate has been producing some of the greatest wines in the Rhone Valley. Today, the range also includes wines from some Roussillon appellations as well as projects in Portugal and Australia.

Under Michel Chapoutier’s leadership, quality improved and Chapoutier gained international recognition. The massive negociant and winery produces single-vineyard expressions and classic wines from a range of appellations in the north and south of the valley.

They have adopted biodynamic farming techniques and have included Braille markings on their labels since 1996. This was done from a desire to reach out to and include lovers of good wines with sight-impairments, and as a tribute to Maurice Monier of La Sizeranne, a member of the family that previously owned the vines of the same name and who invented the first abbreviated version of Braille.

Chateauneuf's history is extremely dense. One of the most important periods was during the 15th Century when the popes resided in Avignon. The village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape became the papal summer residence (Jean XXII, Urbin V and Innocent VI) and they succeeded in promoting its wines.

In the early 20th Century, winegrowers were regularly acknowledged for their wines by a special board of judges which was set up under the instigation of Baron "le Roy de Boiseaumarie."

Made from Grenache from 90 year old vines, Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac has an intense garnet color. It is herbacy on the nose, with hints of spices (liquorice), chocolate, and fruits (strawberry). It is ample on the mouth, fleshy, hot and round, and has an outstanding density with an impressive length. Depending on the vintage, this wine can be kept from 30 to 60 years or from 50 to 75 years.

The 2020 Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac is a remarkable red wine hailing from the prestigious Chateauneuf du Pape appellation in the Rhone region of Southern France. This wine, crafted by the renowned producer Chapoutier, is a true testament to the artistry and expertise that goes into winemaking.

In the glass, the wine exudes a deep, enticing red hue that captures the eye and arouses curiosity. On the nose, there is an intoxicating blend of ripe blackberries, cherries, and mixed berries, accompanied by alluring notes of licorice and sweet spices. It is a seductive bouquet that invites you to delve deeper into the glass.

Upon the first sip, the wine reveals its true character. It is full-bodied and velvety, with a creamy texture that caresses the palate. The flavors of cherries, strawberries, and raspberries take center stage, providing a succulent and precise experience. The tannins are well-integrated, adding structure and depth to the wine.

Critics have been enamored with the 2020 Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac, and it's easy to see why. Jeb Dunnuck awarded it an impressive score of 98 points, praising its layered and seamless mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and awesome finish. James Suckling also recognized its allure, awarding it 94 points and noting its volume, texture, and succulent long finish.

This wine is a pure expression of Grenache, as it is crafted from 100% Grenache grapes that have been carefully destemmed and brought up in concrete tanks. The result is a wine that showcases the varietal's true potential and character.

With its concentration, intensity, and freshness, the 2020 Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac is a wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for further development. It is a wine that deserves to be savored and appreciated, and it will undoubtedly continue to shine over the following decades. Bravo to Chapoutier for crafting such a brilliant bottle of wine.
