Domaine Lécheneaut’s 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges “Au Chouillet” Vieilles Vignes is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits, sourced from a small lieu-dit parcel of roughly 0.7 hectares. The domaine describes the site as an alluvial-influenced mix over Oligocene marl, with clay, red silt, gravel and deposits linked to the nearby Meuzin valley. Vines are old—cited as around 68 years on the producer’s materials, and “75 plus year old vines,” according to Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy). The grapes are hand-harvested, and production is limited, averaging about 4,200 bottles.
In the glass, reviewers agree on a notably deep color and a style that combines perfume with structure. Vinous rated it an excellent 93 points and highlights a “perfumed bouquet with potpourri” alongside “vivid black cherry and wild strawberry fruit,” calling the wine “Very fine.” That aromatic lift carries into what Vinous describes as a “medium-bodied” palate with a “gentle grip,” emphasizing that it is “quite floral in style” yet finishes with “plenty of depth and concentration…with ample freshness.”
Jasper Morris also scored it an excellent 93 points, focusing more on the wine’s horsepower and architecture. He notes “another deep saturated purple colour” and finds “significantly more power,” describing it as “gorgeously weighted, firm with excellent tannins and acidity.” His fruit profile leans darker, citing “plums as well as dark raspberries,” and he underlines its cellar-worthiness with “A long way to go.”
One interesting point of style comes from Vinous, which finds the profile “intriguingly not a million miles away from a cool-climate Syrah,” though adding plainly, “But it works.” Morris adds that “The Lécheneauts have been trying out biodynamic experiments here,” suggesting ongoing refinement in the vineyard. Overall, 2020 “Au Chouillet” reads as a concentrated, floral-leaning Nuits-Saint-Georges with freshness and aging potential.
