The 2020 Riesling Sommerberg is the second vintage of this steep cru, and Humbrecht replanted the 32.5-are vineyard on decomposed granite in 2012 and 2013 in high density (9,500 plants per hectare, all from their own massal selections from the Brand, which was planted in the 1920s). The nose of this intensely yellow-golden grand cru is impressively pure and aromatic, reminiscent of mangoes and wet, weathered stones. On the palate, this is an elegant, intense and fruity yet still not dramatic or tensioned Riesling with fine tannins and fine orange/lemon bitters. 12.4% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022. - Stephan Reinhardt
