Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2022

(94+ points) A pure expression of Trebbiano, the Petrolo 2020 Bòggina B is a creamy, full-bodied white with generous aromas of honey, crushed nuts, yellow rose and flinty stone. There is an especially abundant and sunny...

Petrolo winery is owned by 4 generations by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family. The estate extends over 109 acres, 825 to 1,500 feet above sea level, in an area known for prestigious wines since the Renaissance.

The vineyards are set in Val d'Arno Superiore, among the hills of the "Chianti Colli Aretini," bordering southeastern Chianti Classico. The somewhat loosely packed soil features layers of claystone, shale and limestone.

Petrolo aims to produce wines with character and terroir from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, with 5,500 plants per hectare, production has been reduced to less than 8,000 cases in order to maximize quality. Hand-harvested and fermented in individual lots using native yeasts, the bulk of production is aged in French barriques, though they do employ the use of large oak casks.

Petrolo produces six dry wines and a Vin Santo, but is best known for the 100% Merlot, Galatrona, and the Cabernet-based Il Torrione.

The 2020 Petrolo Boggina B Trebbiano Toscana IGT is a remarkable white wine from Tuscany, Italy. With its elegant and refined character, this wine showcases the true potential of the Trebbiano varietal.

In the glass, the wine displays a bright and radiant golden hue, hinting at its richness and complexity. The aromas that waft from the glass are truly captivating. Notes of honey, crushed nuts, and yellow rose immediately greet the senses, creating a symphony of enticing scents. As the wine opens up, delicate hints of flinty stone add a touch of minerality to the bouquet, enhancing its overall allure.

On the palate, the Boggina B reveals its true brilliance. It is a full-bodied white wine with a creamy texture that coats the mouth in a luxurious embrace. The flavors are harmonious and well-balanced, with the honeyed notes carrying through from the nose. There is a tangy acidity that adds freshness and vibrancy to the wine, making it a delight to sip.

The 2020 vintage of the Boggina B is considered exceptional, with an especially abundant and sunny quality. The organic fruit for this wine is sourced from a two-hectare vineyard with rocky Galestro soils, adding a unique terroir-driven character to the final product.

Renowned wine critic Monica Larner of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine an impressive score of 94+ points. She describes it as a pure expression of Trebbiano, highlighting its potential to become the great, age-worthy white grape of the region. James Suckling also praised this wine, giving it a fantastic score of 98 points. He notes the abundance of lemon curd and wax flavors, as well as the long and delicious finish.

The 2020 Petrolo Boggina B Trebbiano Toscana IGT is a truly superb wine that showcases the best of Tuscany and the Trebbiano varietal. Its elegance, complexity, and exceptional quality make it a wine that deserves a place in any connoisseur's collection.
