Decanter, January 2023

Dark chocolate, bramble tones, not overly floral or fruity with some cedar and cinnamon notes. Lovely high acidity straight away, forward, bright and energetic with lovely crunchy blue fruit on the palate but creamy...

janeanson.com, November 2022

A powerful character to this wine, touch of oyster shell, soy, salinity, but also creamy with energy, lift and precision, and a violet character that you find increasingly in Pontet Canet. Plenty of Pauillac signature in...

Chateau Pontet-Canet is bright and brilliant with full-bodied fruit, yet finesse, in the mouth. It expresses energy, tension and intensity.

The fruit is fermented with native yeast in semi-conical concrete tanks that facilitate punch-downs. The wine then macerates for an additional four weeks before being removed from the pomace for maturation. One-third of the wine is aged in large, concrete amphorae, designed expressly for Pontet-Canet. The rest ages in French oak barrels.

The 2020 Pontet-Canet, a Bordeaux Blend from the renowned Pauillac region in Bordeaux, France, has garnered significant attention from wine critics for its exceptional quality and aging potential. Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this wine is a testament to the estate's commitment to organic and biodynamic practices.

This vintage has been described as having a rich and complex profile with aromas ranging from blackcurrants and black cherries to hints of crushed walnuts and cocoa powder, as noted by James Suckling, who awarded it an impressive score of 98 points. He emphasized its "ultra-fine, silky tannins" and "impressive purity of fruit."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also scored it 98 points, highlighting the wine's blend and aging process, which involves 50% new French oak barriques and 35% concrete amphorae. Decanter, scoring it 97 points, praised its "dark chocolate, bramble tones," and described it as "quietly seductive and confident."

Wine Enthusiast, with a score of 97, commended its "magnificent structure and balance," describing the texture as "almost velvet." Jane Anson also rated it 97 points, noting its "powerful character" and the integration of "oyster shell, soy, salinity," alongside a "Pauillac signature in its tannic grip."

Jeb Dunnuck highlighted its "layered, seamless mouthfeel," while Jeff Leve appreciated its "soft, vibrant currants, herbs, and spice," both awarding it 97 points. The Wine Independent echoed these sentiments, calling it "stunning" and awarding it 97 points, highlighting its "bright, perfumed red and black fruits."

Overall, the 2020 Pontet-Canet is characterized by its complexity, elegance, and potential for long-term aging, with multiple reviewers recommending consumption from 2026 or later to fully appreciate its evolving profile.
