Familia Zuccardi’s Finca Canal Uco 2021 is a single-vineyard Malbec from IG Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina. It comes from the estate’s Finca Canal Uco, the first vineyard the Zuccardi family planted in the Uco Valley, a site that helped shape their understanding of Altamira’s identity. The vineyard sits at about 1,100 meters and is named for the Canal Uco irrigation channel that supplies water drawn from the Tunuyán River. Soils are described as alluvial, with gravel capped by limestone—an important clue to the wine’s structure and texture.
Winemaking for this cuvée has evolved significantly over its life. As Club Oenologique reports in a review of ten vintages, the early releases leaned on new French barriques, then progressively reduced oak, and “from 2017 onwards, all vinification and ageing moved to concrete,” a house decision applied to Zuccardi’s premium reds. For the 2021, a retailer note specifies that the wine was “fermented and aged in concrete with no oak,” aligning with that broader shift toward purity and site expression.
In style, the 2021 is positioned as a fresher, tensile Malbec rather than a maximalist one. Saratoga Wine describes a “vibrant expression of Malbec,” highlighting “crunchy cranberry, red cherry, and plum fruit,” with “chalky, fine tannins” and “zesty tension,” plus savory edges like “tomato leaf” alongside “pink grapefruit zest” and “red apple peel.” The same source quotes Sebastián Zuccardi framing the intent succinctly: the wine is “a marathon runner rather than a bodybuilder,” suggesting endurance, line, and mineral grip over overt weight.
Reported critical acclaim for the 2021 is strong, though it is not independently confirmed here: Saratoga Wine cites scores up to 97 points (Decanter) and multiple 96-point ratings (Wine Advocate, James Suckling, and Vinous), with 95 from Wine Spectator. If accurate, those would qualify as excellent reviews and place the 2021 among the most highly regarded contemporary Argentine Malbecs in its style.
