Wine Enthusiast, July 2024

Pure berry fruit and cedar aromas, the wine has great purity. It is a straight line of freshness as well as black-currant fruits and ripe acidity. The wine is beautifully textured and firm at its core. Drink from 2028...

Decanter, April 2022

Gorgeous fragrance on the nose, so perfumed and floral - really vibrant - you can smell the Cabernet and the Petit Verdot on the nose. Juiciness straight away from a burst of high acidity focussed on blackcurrant and...

jamessuckling.com, July 2024

This is a very pretty 2021 with a solid, beautiful mid-palate and density. Juicy fruit, slightly chewy tannins and a savory finish. Hints of graphite. Drink or hold.

Bright berry red in colour, nuanced blackberry and loganberry with bitter black chocolate notes from the first attack. Lovely precision, good level of spice, earthy, unfussy, rose stem and blackcurrant bud. This was the...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, June 2724

Blackberries, flowers, cigar box, herbs, espresso, and spearmint nuances pop from the glass with only a few swirls. On the palate, the wine is vibrant, fresh, and medium/full-bodied, with blackberries, chocolate, black...

The Wine Independent, April 2024

The 2021 Pontet-Canet is deep garnet-purple in color. It slowly unfurls to reveal expressive notes of crunchy black cherries, fresh blueberries, and black raspberries, leading to suggestions of wet slate, black olives...

jebdunnuck.com, April 2024

Ripe blue fruits, spring flowers, violets, tobacco, and some graphite notes all emerge from the 2021 Château Pontet-Canet, a richer, medium to full-bodied Pauillac that has polished, building tannins, terrific overall...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2022

(WA 91-93 points) Offering up wild, exotic aromas of blackberries, cloves and Indian spices mingled with notions of rose petal, bruised orchard fruit and cherry pit that evolve rapidly in the glass, the 2021 Pontet-Canet...

Vinous, February 2024

The 2021 Pontet Canet, which contains a little more Petit Verdot than usual, was bottled in July. It has a very attractive bouquet with pure black fruit, cedar and light iris flower scents. It is not powerful, yet there...

Wine Spectator, March 2024

A nice, dark, winey offering, with steeped black cherry and black currant fruit melding nicely with warm earth, alder and cast iron accents through the focused finish. Shows grip and range, with barely any indication of...

Chateau Pontet-Canet is bright and brilliant with full-bodied fruit, yet finesse, in the mouth. It expresses energy, tension and intensity.

The fruit is fermented with native yeast in semi-conical concrete tanks that facilitate punch-downs. The wine then macerates for an additional four weeks before being removed from the pomace for maturation. One-third of the wine is aged in large, concrete amphorae, designed expressly for Pontet-Canet. The rest ages in French oak barrels.

The 2021 Pontet-Canet, a Bordeaux Blend from Pauillac, France, offers a distinctive and engaging experience for wine enthusiasts. This vintage, praised by numerous reviewers, exemplifies the unique character and potential of the region.

James Suckling rates it at 95 points, describing it as a "very pretty 2021" with a "solid, beautiful mid-palate and density," emphasizing its juicy fruit and savory finish. Similarly, Jane Anson also awards it 95 points, noting the wine's "bright berry red" color and "nuanced blackberry and loganberry with bitter black chocolate notes." Anson highlights the precision and spice, underscoring its Pauillac typicity.

The Wine Enthusiast gives an even higher score of 97 points, calling attention to its "pure berry fruit and cedar aromas" and its "great purity." The wine is described as having a "straight line of freshness" with a beautifully textured and firm core, making it suitable for aging until at least 2028.

Decanter provides another 95-point review, noting the "gorgeous fragrance on the nose" and the "juiciness straight away from a burst of high acidity." The review praises the wine's structure and creaminess, describing it as "structured and supple" with a "Cabernet fruit...in full shine mode."

While Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gives it a score ranging from 91 to 93 points, highlighting its "wild, exotic aromas" and "layered mid-palate," Vinous commends its "elegance" and "satisfying, almost citric freshness," awarding it 93 points.

Technical director Mathieu Bessonet is credited for the skilled winemaking, utilizing 50% new oak, 35% amphora, and a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The wine's organic and biodynamic farming practices contribute to its overall appeal, offering a compelling combination of tradition and innovation. Overall, the 2021 Pontet-Canet is a noteworthy vintage with a promising future.
