Mulberries, petals, citrus peel and cherries on the nose, with a touch of mocha. It’s medium-bodied, supple and full of fresh berry fruit. Very silky and fine, with a cool finish. Drink now or hold.

Maison Chanzy’s Mercurey 1er Cru Clos Voyens 2022 is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Côte Chalonnaise, sourced from the enclosed Premier Cru climat “Clos Voyens” in Mercurey, one of Burgundy’s larger wine communes. Chanzy notes the site’s history in its name: “Voyens” derives from the Latin *via*, a reference to an ancient Roman road that ran past the vineyard. The parcel is described as a roughly 1.18-hectare, southwest-facing slope on hard limestone soils—conditions that typically support ripeness without losing structure.

In the cellar, the wine is made with traditional Burgundy techniques: about a 10-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, then fermentation with controlled extraction via pump-overs and punch-downs. It is matured for around 10 months in 228-liter French oak barrels with a restrained 17% new oak, followed by roughly five months in tank before bottling. Chanzy positions the result as a complex Mercurey with red-fruit and spice notes, plus an earthy “forest-floor” register, and an “ample, balanced palate” with smooth tannins.

The 2022 vintage is framed by the producer as both warm and fortunate. After three small harvests, Chanzy calls 2022 “*un millésime d’aubaine*,” pointing to generosity and balance “despite a very hot summer.”

Critically, the wine has landed an excellent review from James Suckling, who scored it 93 points. Suckling emphasizes purity and poise, citing “mulberries, petals, citrus peel and cherries on the nose, with a touch of mocha,” and describing a “medium-bodied, supple” palate that is “very silky and fine, with a cool finish” (James Suckling). His drinking window is flexible and pragmatic: “Drink now or hold,” suggesting immediate appeal alongside the structure to develop over the near term.
