Domaine Jean-Marc Millot’s Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru “Grand Maupertui” 2022 is a small-production Pinot Noir from a 0.4-hectare parcel high in the Clos, near the Château. The site sits in the upper, stonier sector of this famously varied 52-hectare Grand Cru, and Millot’s holding is planted to mature vines (variously cited as 50+ to 60 years). The domaine works organically, and production is tiny—about 1,500 bottles—underscoring how rarely this bottling appears on the market.

In 2022, the wine was vinified without whole clusters, a choice noted by Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy), who also points out that it’s not fully transparent at this early stage. Morris reports “an element of reduction on the nose,” but finds “medium depth, some acidity, raspberry and redcurrant fruit,” adding that “there does seem to be some structure suggesting a more interesting future.” His assessment is an excellent review, topping out at 96 points (92–96).

Burghound is similarly positive, calling out the wine’s drive and poise. While noting “firm reduction,” the review emphasizes “excellent punch to the sleek larger-scaled flavors” and praises a “youthfully austere, lingering and complex finale that displays very fine balanced,” concluding simply: “Lovely.” Burghound’s 94-point high end (91–94) is another excellent professional endorsement, particularly for a Grand Cru expected to develop slowly.

Elevage is reported at about 16 months in barrel, with sources differing on the exact proportion of new oak (around 30–40%). Overall, the 2022 Grand Maupertui reads as a classic, cellar-minded Clos de Vougeot: cool-toned red fruit, firm architecture, and length, with early reductive notes likely to integrate with time and air.
