The 2022 Joseph Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Premier Cru Rouge is a 100% Pinot Noir from the southern end of Beaune, close to Pommard. Drouhin owns “fully 14 hectares of this prime premier cru,” as William Kelley notes in *Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate*, a holding “divided equally between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.” The vines sit mid-slope with an east/south-east exposure on clay-limestone soils. In 2022, fruit was picked from August 27 to September 5, with about 25% whole clusters reported, and the wine is typically raised in barrel for 14–18 months with a modest proportion of new oak.
The best reviews are excellent and broadly consistent in style. *Vinous* awarded 94 points, with Neal Martin calling it “more high-toned on the nose,” showing “a mixture of red and blueberry fruit,” and noting that whole clusters add “subtle white pepper and bay leaf notes.” On the palate, Martin emphasizes balance and structure: “supple tannins and fine acidity… quite dense in the mouth with gentle grip,” plus “hints of black olive towards the finish,” advising, “Give this Clos des Mouches three or four years in bottle.”
*Burghound* also rated it 94, highlighting an “expressive nose” that is “more floral in character,” with “black raspberry, rose petal, violet, lilac and anise.” The review points to concentration without heaviness, citing “a gorgeous texture” and “a very firm tannic spine,” concluding it is “quite lovely… Zen-like. Absolutely worth considering.”
Kelley (*Wine Advocate*, 94) finds it “shaping up beautifully,” with “sweet cherries, cassis, licorice and spices deftly framed by toasty new oak,” describing a “rich and layered” wine with “succulent acids and powdery tannins.”
Jasper Morris (*Inside Burgundy*, 93) underlines its immediacy and polish: “vibrant red fruit energy, dark raspberry,” with “fine tensile strength… well integrated oak, and persistent.” Overall, 2022 Clos des Mouches Rouge looks set for mid-term cellaring, combining perfume, density, and controlled structure.
