Baker & Hamilton’s 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is the second label of Oakville’s Vine Hill Ranch, drawing on the same Phillips family estate fruit that has helped define modern benchland Cabernet. Several reviewers also underline its role in the broader VHR lineup. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate notes it “incorporat[es] more benchland and fewer hillside parcels, as well as some young vine material,” and adds that it is “focused on national distribution rather than direct to consumer,” meaning it may show up “at upscale steakhouses.” Jeb Dunnuck likewise frames it as “the second wine of Vine Hill Ranch.”
Critics largely agree on a ripe, polished Cabernet that still carries energy and structure. International Wine Report (94 points) highlights “ripe blackberry and dark cherry” with “exotic spice, pencil shavings…wildflowers, and a touch of vanilla bean,” calling the palate “rich and full-bodied” with “depth and precision.” The Wine Independent (93) describes a “deep garnet-purple” wine with “blackberry pie, kirsch, and mulberries,” plus “rosebud tea” and “a waft of black pepper,” finishing with “a real skip in its step.”
The top review is from JamesSuckling.com at an excellent 96 points, citing “blood plums, black currants, mocha, blueberry compote, licorice, potpourri and spices,” with a “textural and rounded” palate, “fine tannins,” and “bright acidity.”
Decanter’s 95-point review also stands out, calling 2023 “a powerful, beautifully built wine” that is “impressively balanced,” with “sagebrush spice and elegant cedarwood notes” and “muscular yet refined” tannins. Vinous (94) emphasizes a more lifted register—“red/purplish-toned fruit,” “soaring floral aromatics,” and hints of “lavender, cinnamon and new leather”—finishing on “fine-grained tannins.”
While Wine Advocate finds it “still structured and firm… but with slightly less depth and richness” than the main estate wine, multiple critics conclude that the combination of Oakville provenance, balance, and length makes it a serious, ageworthy Cabernet. Dunnuck suggests a wide window: “Drink 2025-2040.”
