Ca’ Marcanda is Angelo Gaja’s Bolgheri estate, founded in 1996 after what the winery itself calls “endless negotiations” for the land. Magari—its Bordeaux-inspired red blend—is now bottled as Bolgheri DOC and in 2023 it’s built on Cabernet Franc, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from the estate’s mix of darker clay and whiter limestone soils. Alcohol is reported around 14% (varies by source).
Stylistically, the 2023 reads as a polished, medium-to-full red that leans on Cabernet Franc for lift and savory detail while keeping Bolgheri’s natural generosity. Decanter describes it as “deep and plummy,” with “a chocolatey nose with balsamic herb notes,” followed by a “poised and very fresh” palate and “balanced structure” (Decanter, 91). James Suckling highlights the variety-driven aromatics—“plums, bell peppers, eucalyptus leaves and cherries”—and notes a “crunchy palate” with “crisp acidity… and a grainy finish,” recommending to “drink now” (James Suckling, 92).
Several top reviews push the wine into excellent territory. Jeb Dunnuck’s 94–96 point assessment (published as 96) calls Magari “one of Bolgheri’s top blends of the vintage,” praising its “freshness and definition,” “vertical structure,” and “mouthwatering, saline edge,” with “the Cabernet Franc shining brightly” (Jeb Dunnuck, 96). Monica Larner, for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, emphasizes its immediate appeal: “plump berry fruit, baked blackberry pie and sweet spice,” plus “a creamy texture and ripe phenolics” and “a touch of subtle sweetness” on the finish (Wine Advocate, 94).
Antonio Galloni also lands at an excellent 94, calling it “dark, succulent and super expressive,” with “leather, tobacco, incense and dried herbs,” and confirms the blend at 60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot (Vinous, 94). Overall, 2023 Magari pairs freshness and savory complexity with a supple, inviting core, making it approachable early while still structured enough for short- to mid-term cellaring.
