With origins dating back to 1638, Saint Julien's expansive Leoville estate was the largest vineyard in all the Medoc at the time of the French Revolution. After various successions and changes, the estate was eventually divided into the three Leoville properties we know today: Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, established in 1840. The outstanding quality of Leoville Poyferre wines gained early recognition when it was ranked second growth in the 1855 Classification.

The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyards of Leoville-Poyferre into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravely, well-drained soils present in Saint Julien and a balanced environment for the vines. This diversity contributes to the wines magnitude and complexity.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre was most recently acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family. Didier Cuvelier has presided over the destiny of this gem since 1979. Chateau Moulin-Riche (from a specific terroir) and Pavillon de Leoville-Poyferre (from younger plots of vines) are also produced at the estate.

The 2023 Leoville-Poyferre Bordeaux Blend from the St Julien sub-region of Bordeaux, France, has garnered widespread acclaim from several prominent wine reviewers. This red wine, produced by Leoville-Poyferre, showcases a deep garnet-purple color and is closed with a traditional cork.

James Suckling, from jamessuckling.com, awarded the wine an impressive score of 96 points, describing it as "very pretty and polished" with "plenty of currant and plum character." He noted its medium- to full-bodied nature, creamy, round tannins, and a "juicy finish," ultimately calling it "very refined."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, represented by William Kelley, rated the wine at 95 points. Kelley highlighted its aromas of cassis, plums, pencil shavings, and toasty new oak, describing it as "rich and chunky" with a deep core of succulent fruit. Jane Anson rated the wine highest at 98 points, lauding its deep ruby color and flavors of "ink, campfire, espresso, mint, cassis, and damson." She called it "effortless" and a "wine for Bordeaux lovers to seek out," noting its 80% new oak aging and the significant yield, the largest since 2004.

Decanter also rated it 96 points, appreciating its "bramble fruit tones" and "floral elements" with "bright, almost high-toned fruit" and "mouthwatering acidity."
