Peter Michael’s 2023 Pinot Noir “Le Caprice” is a single-vineyard, estate bottling from the Fort Ross–Seaview AVA on the West Sonoma Coast. The Le Caprice vineyard sits on steep, east-facing slopes above 1,000 feet, typically above the fog line but still shaped by Pacific influence. The winery ferments with native yeast, then ages the wine about 16 months in French oak (50% new) before bottling unfined and unfiltered (Feb. 11, 2025). Production was limited to 979 cases.
Critical reception is notably strong, led by an excellent 98-point review from James Suckling, who calls it “one of the top Pinot Noirs of the vintage” and describes a “fresh, linear, eye-opening young wine” built on “black cherries, vibrant raspberries and cedary spices,” finishing with “star anise and mineral flavors.” Suckling suggests it is “drinkable now and best from 2030,” highlighting its capacity to gain nuance.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also rates it excellent at 96 points, with Erin Brooks noting “inviting aromas of red and black cherry, cranberry, blood orange, violet, licorice, pipe tobacco and foresty undertones,” plus a palate “brimming with layer after layer of spicy fruit,” framed by “silky tannins” and “succulent acidity,” concluding with “a long, latent finish” that “will benefit from several years in the cellar.”
Other critics emphasize both density and freshness. Antonio Galloni (Vinous, 95) calls it “a potent, young wine” marked by “dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, French oak and espresso,” advising cellaring as it is “very much an infant today.” Jeb Dunnuck (94) notes “raspberry liqueur” and “toasted spice,” with “ripe tannins” yet “refreshing acidity” and a “long, spiced finish.” Wine Spectator (93) underscores its bright edge—“cherry, pomegranate and blood orange” with “red tea” and a “rose water echo”—suggesting near-term enjoyment through 2030.
