Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2025

(92-94 points) Shafer's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five might be an even better value than the winery's TD-9, despite coming in at a slightly higher price point. It's matured in new French oak for 18 months and...

Shafer Vineyards’ 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon “One Point Five” is a polished, dark-fruited Napa Valley Cabernet built around the house’s Stags Leap District sensibility: ripeness and power, handled with control and texture. Critical reception is consistently strong, with multiple mid-90s scores and one standout review.

The top note comes from Jeb Dunnuck, who awards an excellent 96 points and calls it “a bigger, darker Cabernet Sauvignon in the lineup,” highlighting “blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, gravelly earth, and cedar pencil notes.” He adds that it is “full-bodied” with a “rich, layered, elegant mouthfeel,” “plenty of tannins,” and “a great finish,” recommending patience: “deserves 4-5 years of bottle age,” projecting “25 years or more of longevity” (drink 2029–2049).

James Suckling (94 points) emphasizes aromatic lift alongside density, describing it as “generous and perfumed” with “blackberry confit, violets, licorice, cigar box and graphite,” plus “refined, polished tannins” and concluding it’s “a well-made and classy wine… Drink or hold.”

Decanter (95 points) frames the 2023 as structured and mineral, “full of tension,” with “dusty minerality” and “unsweetened cocoa powder,” finishing on “velvety tannins that glide toward a fresh, mineral-rich finish.”

Antonio Galloni at Vinous (94 points) calls it “stellar,” citing “dark plum, blackberry, menthol and espresso,” and positions it as “a gorgeous bridge into the flagship Hillside Select.”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rates it 92–94 points and notes élevage details: “matured in new French oak for 18 months,” with “slightly cedary, toasty oak notes” around “black cherry and cassis.” Wine Spectator (93 points) finds it “laden with warmed cassis and plum compote… roasted vanilla, tobacco and black licorice,” and suggests a 2027–2039 window. Production is reported at 10,000 cases.
