Winedoctor, May 2026

(97-99 points) This wine from Vincent Millet is beautifully pure, fresh and complex on the nose, with scents of brambles, currants and salted liquorice. The palate is understated and controlled, with a silky wrapping of...

janeanson.com, April 2026

The most firmly constructed wine of the Calon stable of course, but it still delivers the combination of finesse and concentration that is typical of the best wines in 2025. Much more graphite and slate on the texture of...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2026

(96-98 points) Dark in color, the perfume delivers a wealth of red, purple, and white flowers from the start, then shifts to a display of red, with black pit fruits and berries. The vivid palate seals the deal with...

Falstaff International, April 2026

Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Black berry fruit with a fine hint of precious wood, nuances of blackberry confit and cassis, delicate hints of spices and orange zest...

jebdunnuck.com, May 2026

(95-97+ points) A big step up over the Marquis, the 2025 Château Calon Ségur is based on 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, and will spend 20 months in 100% new oak. The nose...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2026

(95-97 points) A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2025 Calon-Ségur offers up a deep and incipiently complex bouquet of dark berries, rose petals and violets, framed...

The Wine Independent, May 2026

(94-97+ points) Massive and fruity structure with notes of cigar box, cherries and marzipan and a deep reservoir of stamina and fruit. Even though this wine seems rather massive, there is a fine and elegant layer of fruit...

The Wine Palate, April 2026

(95-97 points)Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2025 Calon Ségur shimmies out with seductive notes of iris, fresh blueberries, and black currant jelly, giving way to hints of underbrush, crushed rocks, and mossy tree bark...

Vinous, April 2026

(95-97 points) The 2025 Calon Ségur is a total head-turner. Aromatic and structured, the 2025 hits all the right notes. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2025 is packed with intense fruit and equally potent tannins...

Decanter, April 2026

Smells so alive on the nose, crystalline but ripe blackcurrants with some liquorice and tobacco touches. Tar, campfire smoke – a charred element. Grippy and filling but in a soft, powdery bouncy, almost chewy sense – but...

jamessuckling.com, April 2026

(95-96 points) Aromas of ripe black currants, yet menthol and other fresh herbs come through. Medium body, with firm and slightly chewy tannins and a savory finish. Plenty going on here. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17%...

The Grand Vin of Calon Segur is the mirror image of its terroir, revealing both lovely softness and amazing intensity. The vines, 8,000 per hectare, are planted on deep gravel that lies atop clay. 54% of the vines are Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

The manual harvest is followed by both shake-table and hand-sorting. Fermentation is in temperature-controlled conical stainless-steel tanks with maceration for 18 to 21 days. The wine ages 18 to 20 months in 30% new French oak barrels and are fined with egg whites.

Château Calon Ségur is a Saint-Estèphe Third Growth (1855) and the northernmost of the Médoc’s classified estates, drawing its grand vin from an enclosed 55-hectare vineyard of gravel and clay. The 2025 is still a barrel sample, but critics largely agree it is a serious, classically built Calon with notable refinement.

Several reviews qualify as excellent. Jane Anson rates it 98, calling it “an exceptional Calon” and “one of the wines that really showcases the highest potential of the vintage,” emphasizing “graphite and slate” texture and a “slow unroll” of “iris bud, cassis, crushed violet flowers, espresso and cocoa bean.” Winedoctor is even more emphatic at 97–99, describing “superb balance” and “one of the greatest young Calons I have tasted.” Vinous’ Antonio Galloni (95–97) calls it “a total head-turner,” noting it is “packed with intense fruit and equally potent tannins” and advising patience.

Aromatic signatures repeat across tasters: florals (violet, rose petal, iris), cassis and dark berries, plus savory herbs and mineral tones. Galloni notes “dried herb, crushed rose petal and mint.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate’s William Kelley (95–97) highlights “dark berries, rose petals and violets,” “ultra refined tannins,” and a “long, penetrating finish,” reporting 13.6% alcohol and pH 3.6.

Blend details vary by source, but most reviewers cite 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot; Kelley reports a higher Merlot component (34%). The élevage is consistently described as 20 months in 100% new oak.

Harvest ran roughly September 4–20, with yields around 35 hl/ha (Anson; Jeff Leve). Leve (96–98) calls the finish “long, refined, powerful, restrained, and focused,” projecting a long drinking window (2032–2065). Despite its structure, Decanter suggests it feels “a bit more accessible than Calon can sometimes be” at this stage.
