Robert Parker praised the 1995 vintage in Bordeaux in the early stages for the “consistently top-notch red wines across all appellations,” and now, over 20 years later, the top wines still show plenty of intrigue, including this lovely, mature effort from Giscours. Direct from Bordeaux and with perfect provenance, the best price around is just icing on the cake for this aged gem!
"One of the best-known Third Growths of the 1855 Bordeaux classification," per Vinous, Giscours is "appreciated for its breed and perfume as well as its relatively low price compared to other top names of Bordeaux."
Giscours' owners at the time favored Merlot over Cabernet, and this one is a rather uncommon 60/40 split in Merlot’s favor. Although it's an atypical blend for a Médoc classified growth, it is by no means unheard of - two other prominent Margaux, no less than Palmer and Lascombes, are known for their silky, Merlot-driven wines!
It can be a challenge to rely on professional reviews for older wines because the critic had a brief moment with the wine in its infancy, but we popped a bottle last week and the 1995 Giscours surpassed our expectations.
It's a classic, mature Margaux at its peak - aromatically expressive and complex with an elegant, seamless profile on the palate. And the best part is that this still has plenty of stuffing in reserve to go strong for another 5-10 years.
Fans of aged Bordeaux will already know what a sublime experience a mature wine can provide and will know to hit reply on this offer right away! We only have a few cases in stock, so act fast. Cheers!
