"Any project Michel Chapoutier is involved with seems to excel..." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
While the Languedoc-Roussillon offers up some of the most exciting opportunities for winemakers in France, it still might have come as a surprise when Rhone legend Michel Chapoutier and Australia's Ron Laughton (Jasper Hill) paired up in the region over a decade ago. The Agly Brother’s 2009 Cote du Roussillon is an excellent rendition of their partnership and a testament to their skill. This is a no-brainer for Rhone and southern France enthusiasts (or frankly anyone in the mood for a bold-styled red) with our discount today of over 45%!
Michel Chapoutier needs little introduction as his Rhone wines are some of the best in all the region. Ron Laughton founded the Jasper Hill Wine in Victoria and focused on terroir driven wines, mainly Syrah/Shiraz, farmed biodynamically. This love of terroir and proper farming made them a natural match, though it took a serendipitous meeting in the 90’s to kindle that flame. The Agly Brothers project takes its name from old vines of the Agly Valley and Chapoutier/Laughton’s well-aligned philosophy.
Described as a “fabulous, naked expression of the terroir in the Agly Valley” by Jeb Dunnuck, the JJ Buckley team was surprised at the development of this bottling. The formidable tannins of this rather shy release have integrated and the classic notes of the region are abundant, with berry preserves and dried herbs mixing delightfully with the still fresh acidity. This will drink well for the next five years, so grab a case today at the lowest price in the country.
