Things rarely change quickly in Burgundy, but try telling that to Erwan Faiveley! In just six vintages since taking over the family domaine, Erwan has firmly altered course from the austere vin de garde of the past and ushered in a more balanced, elegant approach to the iconic domaine’s top wines - like today’s 2012 Clos Vougeot.
Available for the lowest price in the U.S., this is an exceptionally balanced Clos Vougeot with its deeply harmonious and layered character, and it's a stunning choice for the cellars of Burgundy enthusiasts.
Erwan Faiveley has not been shy about the change of direction he's made at the family domaine: “My father favours wines that are big, tannic” Erwan said recently, “and my direction is the opposite.” Despite the assertive claim, the Faiveley lineup is still quite powerful and made to go the long haul in the cellar, but they do now carry a greater depth of fruit and texture.
2012 was the first vintage Erwan felt he had fully accomplished his vision, and the Clos Vougeot grand cru is a stunning expression. Far from being made in an easy or approachable style, the Faiveley Clos Vougeot is “brooding and highly complex” (Burghound) and “long on potential” (Vinous). The more powerful fruit and “harmony on the beautiful finish” is where Erwan’s touch is most apparent, and it's clear that this is a wine that will develop beautifully in the bottle. We highly recommend you stash a few bottles away as it will not disappoint. Cheers!
