2012 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
"Burgundy lovers who have not yet discovered how great the wines are these days from Richard and Céline Fontaine will be richly rewarded to try and track down some of these stunning 2012s!" - John Gilman, View from the Cellar
While we patiently wait for the last couple vintages of red Burgundy to unwind a bit, the best 2012s are already showing brilliantly today. The Rugiens 1er cru is certainly one of the best, at the pinnacle of the Pommard hierarchy and is arguably worthy of elevation to grand cru status. Fontaine-Gagnard is a fabulous artisanal domaine and their 2012 Les Rugiens is a serious over-achiever. John GIlman praised them for their “absolutely stellar examples” from the 2012 vintage, and though based in Chassagne-Montrachet, they are “making superb wines of both colors” including this brilliant Pommard, available currently only at JJ Buckley.
From 30+-year-old vines in the Rugiens Hautes, this is Pommard at its best, with a “lovely bouquet of cherries, quince, classy soil tones, incipient gamebirds, woodsmoke, roses and vanillin” (John Gilman). Elegance really is the keyword for this bottling, unlike typical Pommard. The latest generation of this long-standing Burgundy clan is Céline Fontaine, who continues to make a dizzying array of top crus in the Cote de Beaune, centered around Chassagne-Montrachet.
Rugiens is undoubtedly one of the top crus in Pommard, and in good hands, it is capable of rivaling wines that will run many multiples more in price. This is in prime form today yet will continue to develop admirably over the next 10-20 years, but we have just a tiny parcel in stock so you'll want to act quickly to add this one to your cellar. Cheers!
