2012 Domaine Gros Frere et Soeur Echezeaux Grand Cru

The extended Gros family is one of the most eminent in all of Vosne-Romaneé, with its many branches producing world-class Pinot from these legendary vineyards for over 160 years. Bernard Gros, “one of Vosne-Romanee’s most entertaining winemakers” (Wine Advocate), has been tending holdings in Richebourg, Echezeaux, and Grand Echezeaux, (the latter abutting DRC) for decades and has earned a reputation among collectors for intense, sumptuous reds with serious longevity. Back when Bernard Gros took over from his uncle Gustave in 1984 however, he made the hard call of progressively replanting all of his vines. The long-term payoff is finally starting to show at this address with his Echezeaux holdings now solidly in their prime and competing with the best of the Gros clan.
Showing “sweet spices, dried flowers, rose petals” and “silky tannins” (Galloni), Bernard Gros has never been shy with new oak, but given the exceptionally low yields, this high-quality terroir has no trouble at all supporting the added levels of richness, tannin, and spice. In his own words Bernard Gros lets his wines “speak for themselves because I really don't have anything to add,” an attitude that appropriately defines his approach.
2012 was a remarkably good vintage for top crus with terrific aging potential and rich, fleshy character. Gros’ already miniscule yields were cut further however, and the quantity is more limited than usual. Our buyers were able to secure some of this limited allocation for the lowest price on the market, so interested collectors shouldn’t delay!
