2012 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Fox Den Vineyard
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $39.94 (reg. $59.94)
2012 was a banner year in California for so many varietals, but Pinot Noir was blessed with that perfect balance of elegance and richness. The 2012 Dutton-Goldfield Fox Den straddles those two ideals gorgeously and we have this outstanding effort available for the best price of any vintage currently on the market!
The Fox Den Vineyard's high natural acidity, and expressive ripe red berry preserves drench a backbone of spice, black tea and balsamic notes, with faint mushroom notes lurking beneath the dense and vibrant surface.
Despite all the accolades surrounding 2012, the Green Valley sub-region of the Russian River Valley encourages some restraint. Clocking in at a modest 13.5% abv, winemaker Dan Goldfield aged it in French oak for 15 months, though with only 50% new barrels. Props to Dutton-Goldfield for giving the fruit just the right treatment to honor its old-world heritage, emphasizing balanced spice and depth.
2012 brought quality for sure, but also quantity - high yields were seen at many sites. However, Dutton-Goldfield selected just the cream of the crop for this bottling and a minuscule 654 cases were made. Drinking beautifully at this stage, but showing density and structure that presage a stunning future, pair this with delicate autumnal dishes of fowl or game, over the next ten years. At this price, you'll be happy to stock up on this "elegant and well structured" Pinot Noir. Cheers!
