"You are going to love the 2012 Barolos...I was impressed with their generosity and, more importantly, drinkability." - James Suckling
Barolo is described as the ‘wine of kings,’ but when it comes to Fontanafredda, it’s not just hyperbole. Started by the first King of Italy in the 1800s, Fontanafredda is one of Barolo’s most historic producers, and after over a hundred and fifty years in business, it was named 2017’s European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast! Their flagship Serralunga Barolo is a benchmark for value thanks to consistent quality in every vintage and it is regularly one of our best-selling Baroli. We have the 2012 at the absolute lowest price in the country and given how well it's drinking today with classic Serralunga texture and structure, it’s a can’t-miss!
Fontanafredda’s royal origins aren’t the only thing that sets it apart. The King’s son Alberto of Mirafiori was a trailblazer in Barolo, turning it into the legendary wine we know today by relying on salaried employees instead of sharecroppers and developing the most modern winemaking techniques of the time. While the 20th century was less than kind to the magnificent estate (being foreclosed and then run by a Tuscan bank!) in 2008 Slow-food advocate Oscar Farinetti purchased the estate and began its rejuvenation. The newly reborn Fontanafredda is harkening back to its origins as an innovator in the community, phasing out chemical fertilizers, and promoting economic development among the smaller farmers they work with.
Finding a quality Barolo below forty bucks is hard enough, but at $29.94 this Barolo redefines value. For 30% off and the best price of any vintage currently on the market, this is a steal so load up in quantity. Cheers!
