"...it is clear Mother Nature smiled on Fontodi in 2012...Readers who can find Fontodi's 2012s should not hesitate, as they are truly magnificent."
- Antonio Galloni
When it comes to great Sangiovese, Fontodi is the go-to name in Chianti. From their $100+ Flaccianello to this Chianti Classico, Fontodi has been described by the Wine Advocate as a “pace-setter” and “one of the finest wine estates in the world.” Fontodi’s superb vineyards and long history in Tuscany means they are able to turn out a terrific Chianti Classico for under 30 bucks, and at $26.94, this is the best price you’ll find in the country for Fontodi’s classic Sangiovese.
Chianti’s emergence as a quality-oriented region over the past three decades is one of the great comeback stories in the history of wine, and Jancis Robinson has called Chianti “one of the world's great wine treasures.” Fontodi has been an instrumental part of that; their top bottle, Flaccianello, the Chianti Classico, and Gran Selezione are all 100% Sangiovese and in 2012, Galloni writes, owner Giovanni Manetti made “some of his best wines ever.”
2012 was hot one in Chianti, and both the microclimate of Fontodi’s vineyards in the Classico subzone and Manetti’s meticulous vineyard practices allowed him to craft an open knit but balanced Chianti with “aromas of blackberry, crushed violet, tilled earth and a hint of tobacco” (WE93). This Chianti leaps from the glass and is just begging for a wide range of foods from roast meats to classic Tuscan pasta or white bean dishes. Cheers!
