2012 Talenti Brunello di Montalcino
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $43.94 (reg. $59.94)
The 2012 Brunelli are a stunning set of wines, and the old guard of Montalcino are making some of the best in their history, including this 95-points Brunello from Talenti for just under $45 bucks! Talenti has been around since the founding of the Brunello DOCG, and in recent years has been known for “gorgeous balance in a style that combines elements of modern and traditional” (Galloni).
Talenti’s southerly vineyards in Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate assert themselves in the rich, rounded fruit flavors, but current Talenti scion Riccardo always pushes for balance, aging in large casks for 30 months yielding gorgeous notes of dried flowers, subtle spice, and savory roasted almonds. The Wine Advocate has compared 2012 to the “iconic” 2010 vintage in Montalcino, while Vinous’ Ian D’Agata described this beautiful year as a “source of excellent, well-balanced wines” and a “big success for Talenti” in particular. Unlike 2010 however, this vintage was on the warmer side in Talenti’s southerly estate, yielding a less austere style that won’t require decades to appreciate.
Showing “powerful depth of fruit and wonderful length” (Suckling) Talenti has nailed the perfect intersection of value and quality wrapped up in a crowd-pleasing style. It’s still replete with classic Sangiovese flavors and structure however, so purists will love this expression too! Cheers!
