Maison Drouhin is arguably Burgundy’s greatest large producer. With a wide range of top crus, all farmed biodynamically, they have access to a stunning range of quality fruit to assemble some of the most consistently terrific cuvees in Burgundy. Today’s village Vosne Romanee is no exception as it even includes 1er cru material from Les Chaumes! Drouhin’s holdings in Les Chaumes just aren’t large enough for a separate bottling, and so instead they use it to bolster their Vosne Romanee making it an overachiever in every vintage. Vosne Romanee is the Cote de Nuits’ finest commune, containing grand crus like Romanée-Conti and La Tache, and the village level wines from the surrounding vineyards are world-class Pinot Noir.
Drouhin’s biodynamic approach undoubtedly played a role in 2013 and Véronique Boss-Drouhin credited their farming for giving the vines greater protection during difficult weather. Their efforts certainly paid off as the Wine Advocate’s Neal Martin was “mightily impressed by their wines” and this 2013 is a textbook Vosne Romanee. In the end the season was a cool, late year with wines “for long-time connoisseurs” according to Stephen Tanzer, and while this 2013 is already surprisingly accessible on the nose with open notes of dried berries, cherry and garden herbs, it is still fairly structured and will reward patience. Whether you’re just looking for an introduction to Vosne Romanee or need a top-notch village Burgundy to round out your cellar, Drouhin’s 2013 is a classic Vosne that won’t disappoint. Cheers!
