"In my mind, Ramey is one of the top wineries in the United States. Readers who aren't familiar with these wines owe it to themselves to check them out." - Galloni
2013 was a brilliant vintage for nearly everyone in Napa Valley, but that didn’t stop us from eagerly anticipating our regular favorites too. David Ramey is one of the most important winemakers in Napa. In a career that brought him from Chateau Petrus to Dominus, and a bevy of top wines under his eponymous label, Ramey is the go-to guy for Bordeaux varieties and we just couldn’t wait to see what he would do in 2013.
Robert Parker has hailed the 2013 'Annum' as "brilliant" and that should come as no surprise - this is Ramey’s ‘winemakers wine’ that comes from a select few of the best hillside vineyards they could find (Oakville, Rutherford, Mt Veeder). Composed over over 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc rounding it out, the 2013 ‘Annum’ is a perfectly balanced expression of what Napa is all about.
The “2013 Napa Cabernets are some of the most profound, riveting, young wines I have tasted anywhere in the world” writes Galloni, and the ‘Annum’ exemplifies that to a T. The denser mountain fruit and higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is what sets this apart from Ramey’s regular Napa Cab. The unctuous tannin and “core of muscular fruit” (Wine Advocate) presages tremendous development down the line. This will hold for a couple decades easy!
With so many so-called ‘top’ Napa Cabernets selling for well over $100, it’s refreshing that you can still find a vineyard select cuvee from a producer like David Ramey at this price point, and the 2013 is an unmissable beauty! Cheers!
