2013 Salvestrin Cabernet Sauvignon Three D Dr. Crane Vineyard
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
JJB: $139.94 (Online Avg. $145)
We pretty much have a standing order for any top quality 2013 Napa Cabs that come on the market, as the level of quality and long-term aging potential for this vintage is top notch. Even so, the opportunity to secure Salvestrin’s ‘Three D’ Cabernet from the Dr. Crane Vineyard is a rare one in any vintage as only 345 cases are made of this hard to find cult Cab. JJ Buckley is thrilled to have this “distinctive and singular” wine (Parker) from one of Napa’s most historic vineyards. This is an absolute must buy for Napa Cab collectors looking for that serendipitous combination of exceptional vineyard material, old-school family winery, and serious ageability.
Salvestrin’s Dr. Crane vineyard was planted in 1860 by the same Napa Valley pioneer who planted the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane vineyard. Crane was the first in Napa to plant European varieties, back when the state of California was barely a decade old. The Salvestrin’s have tended this extraordinary site in St Helena since 1932 and has remained family owned and operated estate ever since, with Rich Salvestrin naming their top release after his three daughters.
100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this “beauty” offers up “outstanding purity, texture and length” (Parker), from a vintage known for “viscerally thrilling” Napa Valley Cabernet per Galloni. With a couple of decades of upside, this is a collectible Cabernet full of Napa Valley history, and just a darn good wine! Cheers!
