2013 Tikal 'Amorio'

Here’s a stunning red blend that could only come from Argentina! ‘Amorio’ means ‘love affair,’ and this union of Malbec and Cabernet Franc is a beautiful romance and a fantastic deal from Mendoza’s highly regarded Uco Valley.
A 93-point wine for under 25 bucks was enough to make us fall in love, but it also has a savory “mixture of peppery notes and floral aromas” that deftly combines the softer rounder fruit tones of the Malbec with the savory tannic structure of the Cab Franc. At this best price around, the 2013 Amorio is an easy case buy for lovers of both New World Cab blends or Malbec to have on hand as it will pair with nearly any food or company!
Named for both the Mayan ruins of Guatemala and proprietor Ernesto Catena’s son, Tikal was founded in 2001 and is part of the growing wave of terroir-focused, artisanal wineries that are taking over Argentina. The Catenas are an old Italian-Argentine family and Ernesto’s father Nicolás was an “Argentine winemaking pioneer” according the Wine Advocate, but Ernesto struck out on his own to start Tikal as a personal project.
Focusing on biodynamically farmed estate vineyards in Valle de Uco and in the mountainous Northern region of Mendoza, Catena has hit his stride in the past several years. The 2013 vintage in Argentina was cool and dry, leading to wines with the “balance for a graceful evolution” (Vinous).
This is delicious today but will keep developing for another few years so stock up today. Cheers!
