2013 Virna Borgogno Barolo Cannubi Boschis
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $63.94 (reg. $69.94)
Virna Borgogno might be our new favorite winemaker in Barolo as she is one of the few producers crafting Barolo Cannubi Boschis and at a far more accessible price than any of her peers. Add to that she is part of the oldest winemaking family in Barolo (dating back to 1720), and you get a seriously legit operation.
‘Virna’ is the newest incarnation of the late great Lodovico Borgogno’s classic estate. Since 2001, Lodovico’s daughter Virna has been at the head of the operation giving it a much needed 21st-century renovation. The legendary Cannubi cru is famous for good reason, producing some of the richest and most complex Baroli, and has been singled out for its superiority for centuries. Just northeast of central Cannubi, the sandy soils and cooler micro-climate of Cannubi Boschis promote tremendous elegance. Barolo from this natural amphitheater are a gorgeous union of richness and finesse, and this example shows captivating aromas of “blackberry and black truffle” (Suckling) with all the structure and potential you should expect from a top-flight Barolo.
Finding a Cannubi Boschi Barolo is usually a three-figure affair, with examples from Sandrone and Chiara Boschis typically north of $100. With this score and sale price, our allocation will not last long, so contact us at your earliest convenience.
