2014 Domaine de la Bila Haut 'Occultum Lapidem' Magnums
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $42.94 (was: $59.94)
When it comes to finding the most exciting wine region in all of France, the Languedoc Roussillon is nearly always at the top of every critics’ list, with Jeb Dunnuck calling it a “mecca of high quality wines.” Even the master of the Rhone, Michel Chapoutier, couldn’t resist dipping his toe in this vibrant and multi-faceted region, and today’s Bila Haut Cotes du Roussillon is a large format Syrah/Grenache blend that proves it was worth the risk.
Dunnuck has praised Bila Haut and the Chapoutier team for making “fabulous wines that show classic characteristics” and are “incredible values” to boot. The 2014 ‘Occultum Lapidem’ is the kind of pure, complex, but still affordable red that will give the top names of the Rhone a run for their money!
Besides exceptional value, the secret to the Roussillon's growing esteem is the incredible acreage of old vines planted across the appellation, much of it unappreciated for decades. The ‘Occultum Lapidem’ is sourced from 90+ year old vines farmed biodynamically with ultra-low yields, so you get a level of density and personality that is reminiscent of a classic Châteauneuf cuvee, but at a fraction of the price.
With the current average for 750ml bottles at just under $30, being able to get magnums for just $42.94 is a clear bargain! You will absolutely want to grab a few of these magnums as they will cellar beautifully and easily sub in for any occasion that calls for a high-quality Rhone. Cheers!
