"The 2014 Napanook is, once again, a very serious wine." - Antonio Galloni
With 2014 Dominus selling for $200 and up, this is a chance to experience one of Napa's most elite producers at a fraction of the price. Hailing from the same vineyards as Dominus, Napanook offers a great alternative to the grand vin. This blend of Bordeaux varietals is specifically selected from the estate vineyard for their lively fruit and bold character. It's youthful and exuberant, and according to the winery, "...meant to be enjoyed regularly when a more casual wine is called for."
That's not to say that Napanook won't go the distance however. While "a joy to drink now" per Suckling, in an exceptional vintage like 2014, Napanook will pay dividends with some age and is sure to hold strong for the next 15-20 years.
This track record for aging and excellence comes down to the illustrious combination of proprietor and vineyard. Christian Moueix, famous for his many years running Petrus, is the one in charge, and this incredible vineyard was a large component of the great early vintages of Inglenook which originally helped put Napa on the world wine map. The result is one of only a handful of Napa properties ever to receive multiple perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker.
If you're a fan of the best that Napa has to offer, you won't want to miss out on this "impressive showing" from Dominus. Cheers!
