"If you do not enjoy 2014 Chablis, then Chablis is not to your taste. The 2014s have the killer nerve and tension, yet they are often not so austere that they are denuded of charm or challenge the imbiber. At their very best, the 2014s offer everything you want from Chablis." - Neal Martin
For a Domaine that has prided itself on being one of the great old houses of Burgundy, Drouhin’s foray into Chablis has been much more recent, (only 40 or so years ago). Their arrival, however, heralded the rebirth of the region as a quality-oriented force, and today’s exceptional Mont de Milieu 1er Cru proves it.
Coming from a limestone-rich site that is frequently compared to its grand cru neighbors, the Mont de Milieu is a vibrant, structured Chablis that will develop over the next decade. Despite being modern-day Chablis royalty, Drouhin is known for their exceptional QPR, and this is a stunning value in white Burgundy!
The 2014 is Drouhin’s second release of this famous 1er cru and a terrific representation of a vintage that the Wine Advocate called “one of the best Chablis vintages that I have ever tasted.” That means you get a combination of Chablis’ famously electric acidity with greater weight and texture to balance it out. Abutting the southwest facing Grand Crus, Mont de Milieu is one of the two oldest, and according to Clive Coates, best 1er in Chablis, and rather than using new oak to make it taste more like a Beaune Chardonnay, Drouhin ages the Monte de Milieu in tank only, allowing the naturally expressive limestone terroir to shine.
As Stephen Tanzer notes, "2014 is generally a vintage to buy for Chablis lovers. The wines remain considerably less expensive than bottles of comparable quality from the Côte de Beaune". Under $35 for top-quality 1er cru, this is a no-brainer for Chablis fans, so stock up! Cheers!
