"I’m crazy for what Donnhoff does with this site..."
- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Helmut Dönnhoff is the “undisputed star” of the Nahe region (WS), and as Vinous writes, his “classical spatleses have always been his strong suit.” The 2014 Norheimer Kirschheck is a perfectly balanced cool-vintage Spatlese, with delicate sweetness, racy acidity and, thanks to a bit of botrytis, a “lusciously lingering finish” (Vinous).
The Dönnhoff family first came to the Nahe over 250 years ago and today are one of the regions most applauded producers of Riesling. A lot of it comes down to exceptional vineyard practices, which include dry farming, and hand harvesting over multiple passes. The Norheimer Kirschheck vineyard is “perfect Spätlese terroir” according to the Wine Advocate, with steep slate-based soils running down south facing slopes, producing tense, but delicately fruity Riesling that begs you to lean in. Despite the dry climate, Dönnhoff dry farms the vineyard to send the roots deeper, drawing up even more minerally goodness.
This is the lowest price around for Dönnhoff’s 2014 Norheimer Kirschheck, which is a sure candidate for the cellar and dinner table. This is an excellent opportunity to stock up on some Dönnhoff as this bottle is rarely seen for under $30! Cheers!
