2014 Muller-Catoir Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewachs Burgergarten Im Breumel
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $39.94 (reg. $59.94)
Muller-Catoir is one of the great benchmark producers of Riesling in all of Germany. Their Grosses Gewach are always hotly anticipated, and this 2014 Trocken from one of the best vineyards in the Pfalz is a deal that fans of dry Riesling will want to snatch up fast, especially at the sub-$40 price!
While the more forward 2015/16 Rieslings are attracting droves of people new to Riesling’s youthful charm, the Wine Advocate writes that “wine lovers, and professionals as well as the winegrowers themselves, tend to favor 2014 when it comes to Riesling” thanks in large part to the expressiveness of terroir and clear ageability. The best and uppermost portion of Haardt Bürgergarten, Breumel in den Mauern is one of the finest sites in the Pfalz and the among the best of Muller-Catoir’s portfolio.
Muller-Catoir’s reputation goes way back, with the Wine Advocate writing that at “no point since I began tasting the wines of Muller-Catoir in the early ‘80s has this estate slipped from the apex of the Pfalz – indeed, of its nation’s – viticultural pecking order." Even their lower level Rieslings have a “terrific and unbroken track record for impressive aging” (Vinous), so you can imagine how extraordinary a GG Trocken Riesling will be if given the proper time in the cellar.
Grosses Gewachs Riesling may be one of the great values in world-class wine but finding one for under $40 bucks is still an incredible opportunity to stock up for the cellar! Cheers!
