2014 Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon 'The Ranch'
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $39.94 (reg. $44.94)
If you find yourself looking for a domestic Cabernet for casual get-togethers with an equally casual price, Snowden’s ‘The Ranch’ will likely be your top find of the year. While in most years Snowden’s Napa Valley Cabernet is already a candidate for best value in Napa, the price we have secured for the super 2014 is pretty remarkable and you won’t find this estate bottling for under $40 anywhere else!
Cabs at this price are usually from less than worthwhile valley floor vineyards, but 'The Ranch' is sourced from one of “Napa’s most privileged sites” according to Parker. Located way off the beaten path above Rutherford and St Helena, Snowden’s 23 acre estate is a prime site for Bordeaux varieties. Shepherded along by Scott Snowden and Diane, his “gifted” daughter (Parker), the family estate has also benefited tremendously from the help of David Ramey, one of the hottest oenologists in California today. The 2014 vintage was “sensational” (Suckling) for the Snowdens and Antonio Galloni described the year as appealing to “readers with classically leaning palates.”
While relatively forward, this has the balance and poise of an old-world Cabernet, rather than the high-octane new world style. That means this will drink beautifully as a Cabernet for casual dinners any night of the week. Fortunately, at this price you won’t have to wait for a special occasion!
