2014 Star Lane Cabernet Sauvignon
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $40 (reg. $49.94)
Star Lane is clear proof that Southern California can produce a rocking old school style Cabernet at ridiculously fair prices compared to its Northern competition. Plus, with 95+ point from Galloni and this kind of guilt-free pricing, it’s the deal to beat for 2018.
Happy Canyon had already been recognized as a top source for Bordeaux varieties in the Santa Barbara area when Tyler Thomas joined Star Lane and its sister winery Dierberg in 2013, but according to Galloni he has already “catapulted both estates into California’s upper echelon.” 2014 was a “classic, charming California vintage” (Dunnuck) down in Santa Barbara, and this edition of Star Lane’s Cabernet is “bold, pungent and bursting with fruit” (Galloni 95+).
Santa Barbara County has a strong reputation for Burgundian varieties, but in Happy Canyon things are a bit different. Part of the only east-west mountain range in California, the unique terroir in this part of the San Rafael Mountains makes it an extraordinary site for Cabernet. Per Galloni, the Star Lane Vineyard “holds considerable potential for Bordeaux varieties” and Tyler Thomas, has “done an extraordinary job of bringing out all the best qualities of this Happy Canyon site.”
At $40, this is the lowest price in the country and for a superlative Cabernet and it's one you'll want to load up on in quantity. Grab a case to enjoy over the next 15 years and you’ll be thanking yourself more and more with each bottle. Cheers!
