2015 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Vougeot Petits Vougeot 1er Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
From top vigneron Charles van Canneyt of Hudelot-Noellat, the 2015 ‘Petits Vougeot’ 1er cru is a sensational red Burgundy from one of France’s most exciting and talked about winemakers. Declared “one of the greatest sleepers of the vintage” by John Gilman, the Petits Vougeot manages to overachieve in a vintage that is already one for the history books. Gilman writes that this gorgeous red Burgundy is “simply stunning on both the nose and palate”, while the Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate proclaims that “this comes highly recommended”!
Rather than just a diminutive Clos Vougeot, Les Petits Vougeot is a highly distinctive 1er cru. Sitting on the border of two grand cru vineyards, Clos Vougeot and Musigny, the Wine Advocate praised its “impressive substance...that could probably show many Clos de Vougeot and thing or two.” Martin continues to praise this domaine in 2015, impressed by the “effortless nature” of the wines, a “collection of fresh, vibrant, tensile wines that are packed to the rafters with fruit that the warm growing season ordained.”
Burgundy connoisseurs will want to go long on the 2015 vintage as it easily ranks among the best in the past thirty years. The area around Clos Vougeot can struggle to ripen in some vintages, but not so in 2015 - vignerons had their pick of some perfect grapes during the warm, even harvest. Despite the beauty of the primary fruit here, you can enjoy this 2015 Petits Vougeot over the next twenty years, so grab some for your collection today. Cheers!
