2015 Billaud-Simon Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 1er Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
When it comes to the best 1er cru Chablis, the quality you get for the price has never been higher and they represent some of the great values in all of France. The warm and even 2015 vintage upset the natural balance in Chablis, and the Wine Advocate writes that many premiers crus actually outperformed the grand
crus! With Billaud-Simon’s 1er cru ‘Montee de Tonnerre’ this you can see a striking difference. Growers in Montee de Tonnerre were forced by early hail to pick earlier than they planned, resulting in racy, agile wines uncharacteristic of the dry, ripe vintage. While other grand cru Chablis might drink well early, this steel aged ‘Montee de Tonnerre’ is classic Chablis, with 10-15 years of enjoyment ahead.
Along with Monte de Milieu, Clive Coates has ranked Montee de Tonnerre as among the best in Chablis, closest in style and quality to the Les Clos grand cru. Coates writes that Domaine Billaud-Simon is an “excellent domaine” with some very “high-class wines” and their Montee de Tonnerre is classic Chablis: racy, age worthy, and elegant, with a “ripe yet airy combination of pear, apple, mineral reduction and floral nuances” (Burghound).
Part of the old-guard in Chablis, the Billaud family established the domaine 200 years ago. Domaine Billaud-Simon’s impressive work and consistent quality has not gone unnoticed as Burgundy powerhouse Faiveley recently purchased the Domaine. With Faiveley behind them, Billaud-Simon is sure to see even higher demand, so grab some of this delightful Chablis today for just under 50 bucks!
