2015 Chateau Corbin Saint Emilion Grand Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $39.94 (reg. $42.94)
Here's a Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion from one of Bordeaux’s top family producers, and we’ve got it for the lowest price around. Robert Parker calls Corbin “an estate to watch” and “usually one the best values in grand cru classes from St.-Emilion”.
The Corbin vineyard occupies a single plot of prime Bordeaux terroir, straddling the border between Saint Emilion and Pomerol. Naturally, that makes it a close neighbor of Cheval Blanc. Across the appellation boundary, you’ll find some of the most prized Pomerol estates, not least of which are L’Evangile and Petrus. Corbin flies under the radar vis-à-vis such big names, yet Parker calls it an “excellent estate on the Pomerol-St.-Emilion border” that “seems to be making sexy, lush, fruit-forward wines with enormous appeal.”
It’s a family affair at Corbin, and the property has been in the hands of the Cruse family since 1924. Perhaps best known as the proprietors of d'Issan, the large family has at one time or another been involved with such estates as Pontet-Canet, Rauzan-Ségla and Giscours. Today, Annabelle Cruse-Bardinet, a formidable winemaker and graduate of Bordeaux University, is at the helm. She can also call upon the services of Jean-Philippe Fort, right bank consultant extraordinaire and colleague of Michel Rolland.
Jeb Dunnuck calls this "ripe, undeniably sexy and polished on the palate", but this 2015 is still youthful and will benefit from a few years in the cellar. Lay down a case to enjoy over the next 15+ year. Cheers!
