2015 Collemattoni Brunello di Montalcino
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $39.94 (was: $54.94)*
This “small, traditionally-minded property” (Galloni) and their “very underrated, off the radar Brunello” (Vinous) is a ripping good deal for handcrafted, organically grown Sangiovese. Available today for easily the best price around, and given the extraordinary quality of the vintage overall plus a solid 95pt rating from Vinous, you'll want to hop on the 2015 Collemattoni Brunello quickly before it's gone. At its best, Brunello offers power and elegance in balance and Collemattoni's 2015 manages to accomplish both, with a stellar price too!
Collemattoni’s Brunello is a beautifully muscular and fruit forward Sangiovese that is irresistible in this outstanding vintage, and it reflects the character of their microclimate in the higher elevation, southwestern subzone of Sant’Angelo in Colle. 2015 was a “great Brunello vintage, easily one of the top eight or ten Brunello vintages of all time” (Vinous), and this gem will be delicious now with a good decant or left to cellar for the next 15-20 years.
Marcello Bucci started Collemattoni with his father Ado back in 1988, and today their gravity fed, solar powered winery is proving that an artisanal, family run winery can make a classic Brunello without a massive price tag. A 95pt Brunello from such a magical vintage is a great value at this price, and like all under the radar estates making wine this good, it just can’t last!!
95 points, Vinous: "Good full red. Perfumed aromas of red cherry, kirsch, mocha and herbs on the inviting nose. Despite its size, this is graceful and impeccably built, with very precise flavors of red plum, blueberry, milk chocolate and minerals that expand and broaden on the long, seductive finish. Outstanding Brunello that offers both size and refinement. In my opinion, Collemattoni is a very underrated, off the radar Brunello estate but its wines deserve to be better known." - Ian D'Agata
