2015 Domaine Santa Duc Chateauneuf du Pape 'Habemus Papam'
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $45.94 (was: $54.94)
Chateauneuf du Pape has no shortage of great producers these days, but it still came as a surprise when we found out maverick outsider, Gigondas-based Santa Duc, is now making “some of the most compelling examples of Chateauneuf” per the Wine Advocate. With a mere six hectares of property in Chateauneuf, proprietor Yves Gras has slowly but surely expanded Domaine Santa Duc to new terroirs and is crafting exceptionally structured Rhone reds, that while extremely hard to find, are absolutely worth the effort.
From soils of fine sand and red clay, Santa Duc’s 2015 Habemus Papam is a classic Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre blend, aged in old foudre and terracotta. With the beautifully warm and ripe 2015 vintage, Gras’ own typically structured style leads to a perfectly balanced Châteauneuf at a wonderful price.
Domaine Santa Duc has been around for nearly 150 years, but Gras has raised the bar for what is possible in Gigondas, introducing organic viticulture and helping to define an appellation few knew much about. Since exporting his efforts to nearby Chateauneuf, Gras has rapidly proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with.
These “tiny production gems” are “not easy to track down” (Wine Advocate), but fortunately we’ve already done that part for you. Plus, we have the 2015 Habemus Papam for the best price of any vintage on the market.
With its grippy tannin and long finish, you’ll ideally let this one rest a couple years and enjoy for another 10-15 after that. Cheers!
