2015 Domaine Santa Duc Chateauneuf du Pape 'Les Saintes Vierges'

In an appellation as crowded with quality these days as Chateauneuf du Pape, it takes a lot to stand out, but benchmark Gigondas-based producer Santa Duc has done just that, fashioning “superb Chateauneuf” (Wine Advocate) that, while hard to find, is worth the effort in every vintage. That has never been more true than for 2015, and this “tiny production gem” earned 95-points from the Wine Advocate in part for its “lushness and generosity on the palate...and a mouthwatering finish.” Very little of this Chateauneuf makes it to the U.S., and we have it today for the best price around.
Santa Duc is the brainchild of Yves Gras, a Gigondas-based maverick, who has quietly expanded his vineyards in Chateauneuf. While Gras built his reputation on benchmark-setting Gigondas, his quiet foray into Chateauneuf has resulted in “some of the most compelling examples” in the appellation. ‘Les Saintes Vierges’ is 90% Grenache with 9% Mourvedre, and that assemblage excelled in this long, warm growing season. Grenache can stand up to warm weather no problem, while Mourvedre practically demands it, so the outcome is “the most flattering of Santa Duc's current releases” that shows this ripe, decadent vintage without sacrificing balance and structure.
While Santa Duc’s cuvees are “not easy to track down,” they are absolutely worth the effort. Try this today for the lowest price in the country - enjoy right away and over the next 15 years. Cheers!
