While tremendous value has always been a real draw for German wine, lovers of Riesling from the Mosel are going to want to pay close attention as the 2015 vintage is clearly one of the finest for the grape in many a generation, and the prices continue to be pretty unbelievable. Markus Molitor is one of the most trusted cellarmasters in the Mosel: as Vinous writes, “in the dry and off-dry categories, few can match his hand” with Riesling. The 2015 vintage was a “cake walk” according to Vinous and Molitor’s lineup of Rieslings is a “magnificent collection.” The Wine Advocate as well described Molitor’s 2015s as “amazing” awarding this Ürziger Wurzgarten Kabinett 94-points!
Complex yet light on its feet, the 2015 Kabinett (green capsule) is done in the halbtrocken style, with just enough sweetness to support a head spinning level of complexity and energy. And, it's an absolute steal for under $25!
The Ürziger Wurzgarten is a unique site in the middle Mosel thanks to the iron rich soils intermixed with the classic slate. The impact on the wine is a whole new layer of mineral complexity is added to the traditional profile, a “deep, complex and smoky/flinty bouquet of ripe stone fruit aromas, crushed stones and sweet herbal flavors” (Wine Advocate). Wurzgarten loosely translates to spice garden, and the hallmark spice and herbal notes of this celebrated vineyard are in full display.
Riesling fans know that the Mosel can not only represent the pinnacle of this grape, but can also come through with a 94-point stunner with impressive aging potential for a phenomenal price! This will drink gorgeously for a decade or more, so stock up! Cheers!
