2016 is turning out to be a stunning, “potentially classic” vintage for white Burgundy, combining the freshness of 2014 with the perfect ripeness of 2015. That means you get delicious, pure fruit without sacrificing terroir, and today’s 2016 Bouchard Meursault Genevrieres 1er cru is a beautiful magnum full of pure, terroir-driven Chardonnay.
The Genevrieres 1er cru is typically one of the flashier, spicier Meursault crus, more consistent and larger framed than Charmes. In the hands of Bouchard winemaker Frédéric Weber however, the Genevrieres takes on a more mineral-driven “Chablis-like” structure that provides exceptional balance, and promises a long life of enjoyment. This is the lowest price in the U.S. for this vintage of Bouchard’s Genevrieres in magnum, and it will make for a stunning centerpiece at festive meals for many years down the road!
Bouchard is one of the top producers in the Cote de Beaune, and a "Burgundy stalwart" per the Wine Advocate, with nearly 300 years of history. Collectors of white Burgundy have agonized over the increasing oxidation problems that make aging a bit of a gamble but Bouchard was one of the first to switch over to DIAM enclosures, which has made them a go-to for serious collectors.
As it goes with Burgundy, quantities available are painfully slim, so you'll want to get in on this while it lasts. Cheers!
