2017 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $86.94 (was: $109.94)*
The “Latour of Portugal” according to Robert Parker, Taylor Fladgate has a monumental aging curve worthy of collectible status, and for a wine of its pedigree and class, it is a tremendous deal for under ninety dollars. Nearly every declared vintage of Taylor Fladgate in the past three decades has earned over 97pts, and with the Wine Advocate’s potential 100pts for 2017, and a price well under $100, this is one Port vintage that won’t stay on the shelves for long. Even those who don’t normally tread in these waters should consider the value a wine like this can bring to a special occasion or milestone as it can age for decades and would make a terrific anniversary or birth year wine.
Sourced from quintas in the Pinhão and Douro Valley, Taylor Fladgate’s Vintage Port gets the sort of treatment you would expect from a 1st growth or grand cru. Typically the most demanding of age among the major Port producers, Taylor Fladgate’s 2017 still shows the warmth of the vintage, which was “more hedonistic” than 2016 per Vinous. General declarations are rare in Porto, and the back to back blockbusters of 2016/17 are even better because the two years are quite different in personality. Compared to the elegance of 2016, the power, structure, and depth of a warm dry year means these 2017 Ports will last a lifetime.
“A step up (or two)” from the incredible 2016 (Wine Advocate), this is a stunning new release from one of the biggest names in Port!
98-100 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "...A step up (or two) on the 2016, this shows fine depth, more focus, vivid fruit and serious power. It's not particularly thick, austere or astringent, but this is built for the long haul. It is potentially a great Taylor's, effortlessly combining brilliant fruit and structure. It tastes great now (today, it is far more vivid than its Vinha Velha sibling), but the power makes this hard to drink today. So, have some patience...As for the 2017s, the hot new vintage, Taylor's Ports hit home runs, simply put." - Mark Squires
99 points, James Suckling: "Complex aromas of tar, wet earth, dark berry and flowers follow through to a full body, medium sweet and amazing compacted concentration. Vertical and so deep. It goes on for minutes. Truly excellent. Better after 2027."
