The iconic Napa winery of Joseph Phelps has consistently been praised as one of the best in California over the years, and in Sonoma their lineup of intensely flavored, complex Pinot Noirs has been nothing short of tremendous. Phelps’ Freestone Vineyards were planted in a near inaccessible region of the Sonoma Coast back in 1998 and today Phelps winemaker Justin Ennis is making “some of the most intense, powerful Pinots readers will find on the Sonoma Coast” (Galloni) from these exceptional sites. 2018 was a “sensational vintage for Sonoma” (Dunnuck), and this 96pt Freestone Pinot Noir seems set to cement Phelps’ place in California's top tier at an outstanding price to boot!

The late Joseph Phelps was one of the icons of Napa Valley’s renaissance in the 1970s, and his family owned and operated winery is now on its third generation. Their Pinots from the Freestone Vineyards (Quarter Moon, Pastorale) are full flavored, seamless wines, but they are not your ordinary Cali Pinots. With subtle oak, and a touch of whole clusters, it shows Burgundian levels of complexity with “alluring aromas of dried lavender and bergamot, aniseed, blood orange and amaro-like accents” (Wine Advocate), and will age over the next decade.

96 points, Wine Enthusiast: "From a majority of estate-grown grapes and percentage of grower fruit, this impressive wine is juicy, textured, layered and lengthy. With a cool-climate crispness at its foundation, it unfurls lovely flavors of dark plum, wild strawberry and orange peel, finishing in a touch of nutmeg."

94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pale ruby-purple, the 2018 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards has alluring aromas of dried lavender and bergamot, aniseed, blood orange and amaro-like accents with a core of perfectly ripe red and black berry fruits. The palate is light-bodied, silky, soft and juicy but packed with nuanced flavor layers, and it finishes incredibly long. What an elegant, layered expression this vintage!"
